Consider by whom, when and how the first dishwasher was invented, designed and manufactured. For those who are interested in facts, we will unveil the veil of mystery and tell how everything was. There is an opinion that the invention that made life easier for millions of women - a dishwasher - is the creation of female hands. In reality, men were also involved in the creation of technology.
First dishwasher
The facts about the first appliances that make washing up easier vary depending on the source. They write that the first developments belong to the Romans, but to our time there have been no verbal descriptions or illustrations of the "great-grandmother" of modern PMM. Therefore, the name of a genius who really first decided to wash the dishes with his own hands will remain a mystery of past centuries.
A documented design appeared in 1850. The world of science first learned about the unit, capable of washing dishes, excluding the contact of hands with water and dishes. A young resident of the United States, Joel Goughton, patented the development, introducing a failed design that had no economic prospects.
Interesting! A vivid example of when a good idea suffers from a stupid project implementation. The prototype of PMM from Goughton was one, and on the first test the imperfection of his "brainchild" became apparent.
Around this time, King invented the first washing machine, so these two household appliances to this day go “hand in hand” in the home and household appliance market. This does not speak in favor of the dishwasher, because every family in Russia is familiar with the washing machine, which cannot be said about the dishwasher.
Why did Goughton fail?
He came up with a hand-driven construction. In this machine there was a tank, a piston pump supplying water, a too complex and bulky frame on which the tank and the drive handle were held. The idea over hand washing was the idea itself - Goughton gave the housewives the hope that they would soon be able to automate the washing process. There were more disadvantages of the dishwasher: the washing quality was poor, laying the dishes in the tank left much to be desired - after that there were many broken plates, and part of the dishes were not washed due to improper water supply. There was no dirty water pumping system in the design, and rinsing was carried out in a waste dirty liquid.
Who invented the "real" PMM
Who invented the first dishwasher, you know. We offer to get acquainted with the real "heroine" who created an efficient car. Most likely, due to the specificity of the male lifestyle, the first inventor was far from the hardships of everyday life and did not fully understand the essence of the washing process. At least, it is easier to explain the fact that a really working machine was a woman’s creation - probably, the prospect of making her life easier by automating everyday processes smiled at her more. It's about Josephine Cochrane.
The enterprising lady not only made a dishwasher equipped with a manual drive, but also installed the first primitive heating element (water heater) in it. The design was as follows:
- A box made of wood or metal is used as a bunker.
- The dish basket is made in the form of a metal lattice - plates, cups and saucers were placed on it.
- Manual drive mechanism.
- Two piston pumps.
- Hinged lid of the hopper, hermetically locking the dish compartment.
- Water heater.
The equipment found a demand among buyers due to the mass of advantages: it washed dishes well, heated water and was made in a compact case. The plates were securely fixed in the grate, which excluded their beating.
Not without flaws. Large items did not fit into the Cochrane typewriter: pots and pans. She could not cope with washing the cutlery. Manual drive at that time was not a novelty, but society wanted more than the tedious way of turning the handle. Cost played a decisive role - people with high incomes allowed themselves the technique.
Important! Josephine Cochrane did not stop at the first version of the PMM and created several more modifications. The last option was drying. The machine has become more expensive and increased in size, so it was not in demand.
The first electric PMM
The invention of the American became known throughout the world, but this did not give impetus to well-known brands to create such a technique. Issues were limited and dishwashers still did not find wide demand among buyers.
The first electric dishwasher was created by the developers of the German corporation Miele. A significant event falls on 1929. The technical novelty took up a lot of space and was noisy at work, the cost was high, therefore, PMM did not become popular, which is why it was quickly taken out of production.
The following year, electric-powered dishwashers were launched in America, with Kitchen Aid taking up production. At first, buyers became interested in the new product, but quickly lost interest due to the low efficiency of the device. The purchasing power of citizens of the United States at that time was modest.
The Great Depression did not improve the situation, and after 9 years, WWII shots rang out. Few people at that time were concerned with technical innovations. During the war and 5 years after it, they did not talk about dishwashers. The first limited edition of the PMM was released under the Whirlpool brand in 1950.
The first automatic machine
The stagnation in the industry was supposed to end someday - it happened in the 60s. Miele engineers ventured to show the world the first automatic dishwashing machine (it was invented a little earlier). The price was much more affordable than the previous options, and the quality of the sink - on a solid "four". The first customers went, and the cars flew off the assembly line almost at the speed of light. These years can be safely considered the heyday of the era of automatic PMMs, which have maintained a strong market position to this day.
Fact! It is difficult to say who owns the development of the first automatic dishwasher, but for the first time the company received a patent for it, the company Mile.
Miele engineers did not slow down and at the end of the 70s created a model with an integrated microprocessor - this was the first electronically controlled machine. It could not be called reliable, but manufacturers quickly corrected all the shortcomings and created an improved version of the device.
Interesting! They were so high-quality that there were cases when elderly Germans did not want to part with their cars, which had served them for several decades.
Today, the Mile company, along with other companies (Bosch, Candy, Hansa and others) offer the buyer hundreds of models of various types: from full-size to compact. Today, the machine is available to almost everyone. The fact that such a technique is poorly distributed in the Russian Federation is explained by the fact that dishwashers came to us after the collapse of the USSR in the 90s, while the whole world used them with might and main. Now this gap is narrowing, and more and more of our fellow citizens prefer to save time and energy thanks to the dishwasher.
